Major Scaffolding Types and Their Uses

Let me start with this question: what do you think when you see scaffolding in a typical construction site? Do you think it’s one size fits all? Well, it is hard to think otherwise. Unless you are a scaffolding contractor or a seasoned engineer, you might not be able to tell the difference in scaffolding equipment parts. Especially when they have fitted together already, it’s hard to tell them apart. visit https://www.bkhgroup.com.au/scaffold/ to know more about scaffolding types.

So, this article will teach you, as a layman, the different types of scaffolds and how you can use them to serve their unique functions perfectly on a construction site.

Let’s start from the start.

What are the eight major types of scaffolds? They are trestle, patented, steel, suspended, single, double, and cantilever scaffolding. Mind you, there are other types of scaffolds available in the scaffolding industry, but you will always see these major ones around.

If you want to have a complete understanding of these types of scaffolds and how you can use them efficiently, you will need first to learn their definitions. It’s best to understand each type of scaffold’s meanings, purpose, usage, and results. It will help you quickly select the correct type of scaffolds you will need to execute your construction project successfully.

Also, it will help you in creating a safer working environment for your construction workers and avoid unnecessary expenses and delays.

This article is detailed enough to give you everything you need to know about types of scaffolds and their unique uses. And you don’t have to worry; I had made sure this article explains everything in the simplest way possible.

What is scaffolding?

Scaffolding is a temporary erection that functions as a platform for construction workers to carry out their various construction works on a given site while supporting the original form.  Meanwhile, the scaffolding structure can change. It depends on the type of construction project at hand and its requirements.

In addition, scaffolding equipment is made from high-quality materials to support construction workers and materials efficiently.

In a nutshell, scaffolding makes construction works more accessible and faster. It allows construction workers to reach the highest heights in achieving their desired results.

You need to note that scaffolding is made in various types to suit different construction needs. That means the type of scaffold you will need depends on the condition of your construction project.

Different types of scaffolding for construction works

1. Trestle Scaffolding

If you go by the name, you will have a clearer picture. Trestle scaffolding stands on tripod-type portable ladders. This type of scaffold is one of the most popular ones you will find at every construction site, whether the project is a big, complicated one or not.

Trestle scaffolding is a type of scaffold that is very useful, productive, and convenient. On average, trestle scaffolding is always about 5 meters.

Uses

Trestle scaffolding is limited to indoor use. It is not for any exterior works. This scaffold works best for indoor repairs, painting, scrubbing, fittings, and other indoor construction works.

2. Patented scaffolding

Patented scaffolding comes with steel material – not just steel, but high-quality ones. This type of scaffold is ready-made. You don’t have to waste time fitting the parts together before work. From experience, fitting scaffolds together can take more extended hours than necessary. In some cases, it can take the whole day if you don’t have highly skilled scaffolding contractors on site. That makes this type of scaffold more advantageous.

Patented scaffolding comes with unique couplings and frames. You can find it anywhere in the Sydney market. Another advantage of this type of scaffold is that you can use it immediately after purchase.

To use the patented scaffolding, you need to set the working platform on the brackets. You can adjust these brackets to the required level.

Uses

You can use the patented scaffolding for both indoor and outdoor construction works. They are also suitable for painting and repairs.

3. Steel scaffolding

As the name implies, this type of scaffold comes with steel materials. Unlike patented scaffolding, you will have to couple it before use and disintegrate it after use. Though that might seem somewhat challenging, I assure you it is straightforward to use.

It provides higher safety standards while construction is ongoing. Steel scaffolding is among the most popular types of scaffolding in every construction site owning to its numerous benefits.

Uses

Steel scaffolding is perfect for outdoor construction works and more enormous structures.

4. Suspended scaffolding

Suspended scaffolding is created by tying chains to the platform for construction workers. You would have to adjust the height based on the desired level.

Uses

Suspended scaffolding is used for different painting and repair works, though it works best for painting works.

5. Single scaffolding

Single scaffolding is one of the oldest and basic methods of scaffolding used in construction. It includes putlogs, standards, ledgers, which link directly to the wall at an average distance of 1.2 meters.

Additionally, ledgers and standards join at a vertical distance between 1.2 to 1.5 meters. However, the distance between the standards ranges from 2 to 2.5 meters. More so, putlogs stand at an average length of 1.3 meters. If you follow all these calculations to the book, you will achieve the desired result.

Uses

It is perfect for brick masonry.

6. Double scaffolding

This type of scaffolding is also called independent scaffolding. It isn’t easy to make holes in the walls to support the putlogs. Therefore, double scaffolding will help create a sturdy structure to aid construction projects. The first row can be about 25 cm distant from the wall, while the other one can stand about 1 meter away from the first row. The putlogs gain a balanced position with the support of both frames.

Uses

It works best for stone masonry works.

7. Cantilever scaffolding

Cantilever scaffolding is also called single frame scaffolding. There are a few limitations in using it, and it requires several checks before installing it. In this scaffolding system, a chain of needles supports the standards.

Uses

It is perfect for stone masonry works.

On a final note

Having the correct understanding of the various types of scaffold will help you get the accurate dimension whenever you fit your construction works. Meanwhile, you have to be careful enough to follow the required steps when installing the scaffolding on site.
